League Information

General Information
Portsmouth Youth Basketball (PYB) was formed in 2007 with the goal of teaching fundamental basketball skills to boys and girls, grades 2nd – 8th, in a positive environment of teamwork and sportsmanship. The program will run from late November through early March, with no games or practices running the weeks of the town of Portsmouth school vacation.

For the 2015-2016 season Portsmouth Youth Basketball will consist of four divisions. Each division is formed based on grade level (not age). A skills evaluation will “jump start” the season to evaluate each player’s skill level. The teams will then be formed based on the result of the skills evaluation. The skills evaluation is not a “try-out”, it is a tool to help PYB balance the skill level of players within each team. To register for PYB you must live in or attend School in Portsmouth, RI.

Rookie Boys (2nd Grade): The Rookies division is for beginner boys and put a strong emphasis on basic basketball fundamentals. Teams will practice one evening during the week for 1 hour and play one game on Saturday. The Rookies division will play on lowered rims to help achieve the perfect shot technique.

NCAA Boys (Grades 3rd & 4th)/NCAA Girls (Grades 2nd & 3rd): The NCAA division will be divided into gender specific teams. Both the boy and girl teams will practice one evening during the week for 1 hour and play one game on Saturday.

Jr. NBA Boys (Grades 5th & 6th)/Jr. NBA Girls (Grades 4th & 5th): The Jr. NBA will be divided into gender specific teams. Both the boy and girl teams will practice one evening during the week for 1 hour and play one game on Saturday.

NBA Boys (Grades 7th & 8th)/NBA Girls (Grades 6th, 7th & 8th): The NBA division will be divided into gender specific teams. Both the boy and girl teams will practice one evening during the week for 1 hour and play one game on Saturday.

PYB Travel Teams
PYB will field boys and girls travel teams for grades 4th thru 8th. Players will be selected by a committee and participate in weekend tournaments throughout RI. All players must participate in the PYB house league in order to be eligible for travel. There will be an additional fee of $200 to participate in the travel program. More information regarding the PYB Travel program is available on the Travel page.

Gym Locations
Gym locations for practices and games will include the Portsmouth High School and Portsmouth Middle School Gyms. Due to limited gym space, these locations and practice length may change due to scheduling constraints. Once a schedule is finalized, you will be notified of your gym location for practices and games.

Volunteer Opportunities
PYB relies on the enthusiastic participation of many volunteers to assist in coaching and managing each team. If you have a love for the game of basketball and enjoy working with young people, PYB requires each coach and volunteer to complete a Background Check Form. PYB is looking for experienced coaches, but will also provide coaching resources and training to dedicated volunteers.

Not a coach? PYB is looking for volunteers to help in all aspects of the league. If you are interested in volunteering your time, please complete the Background Check Form and e-mail PYB at info@portsmouthyouthbasketball.com and a member of the PYB Board will contact you.
